What is a Percentage?
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred." When we say "25 percent" (written 25%), we mean 25 out of every 100, or simply 25/100. Percentages are used universally because they make it easy to compare proportions regardless of the total size.
Whether you're calculating a tip at a restaurant, figuring out how much you'll save during a sale, or measuring investment returns, understanding percentages is an essential life skill. Our calculator makes these computations instant and visual.

How to Calculate Percentages
- Finding X% of Y: Convert X% to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by Y. Example: 15% of 80 โ 0.15 ร 80 = 12.
- Finding what percent X is of Y: Divide X by Y, then multiply by 100. Example: 25 is what % of 200 โ (25 รท 200) ร 100 = 12.5%.
- Finding percentage change: Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, multiply by 100. Example: from 80 to 100 โ ((100โ80) รท 80) ร 100 = 25% increase.
- Finding the original value: If you know the result and the percentage, divide the result by the percentage (as a decimal). Example: 30 is 15% of what? โ 30 รท 0.15 = 200.

Why Percentages Matter in Finance
Percentages are the language of finance. Interest rates, investment returns, inflation rates, tax brackets, and profit margins are all expressed as percentages. Understanding how to calculate and interpret percentages is fundamental to making informed financial decisions.
A key insight: percentage changes are not symmetric. If your portfolio loses 50%, you need a 100% gain to recover โ not 50%. This asymmetry is why risk management is so important in investing. Our percentage calculator helps you quickly understand these relationships so you can make smarter money decisions.
