Understanding Tipping Etiquette
Tipping customs vary widely around the world. In the United States, tipping is an essential part of service-industry compensation, with servers often earning a base wage well below minimum wage. The standard tip range is 15–20%, with 18% being the most common for satisfactory service.
For other services: bartenders typically receive $1–2 per drink or 15–20%; hair stylists and barbers 15–20%; food delivery 15–20% or $5 minimum; and valet parking $2–5. When in doubt, 20% is rarely too much for good service.
Tips for Smart Tipping
- Always check for automatic gratuity — many restaurants add 18% for groups of 6+; you don't need to double-tip unless the service was outstanding.
- Tip on the pre-tax amount — technically, tip should be calculated on the food and drink cost, not the tax. But tipping on the total is fine too.
