Understanding Tipping Etiquette
Tipping customs vary widely around the world. In the United States, tipping is an essential part of service-industry compensation, with servers often earning a base wage well below minimum wage. The standard tip range is 15โ20%, with 18% being the most common for satisfactory service.
For other services: bartenders typically receive $1โ2 per drink or 15โ20%; hair stylists and barbers 15โ20%; food delivery 15โ20% or $5 minimum; and valet parking $2โ5. When in doubt, 20% is rarely too much for good service.
Tips for Smart Tipping
- Always check for automatic gratuity โ many restaurants add 18% for groups of 6+; you don't need to double-tip unless the service was outstanding.
- Tip on the pre-tax amount โ technically, tip should be calculated on the food and drink cost, not the tax. But tipping on the total is fine too.
- Round up for convenience โ if the math is close, round to the nearest dollar. Servers appreciate whole-dollar tips.
- Use this calculator for group dining โ avoid awkward calculations at the table and ensure everyone pays their fair share.
- Consider the service quality โ 15% for adequate, 18% for good, 20%+ for excellent. Adjust accordingly, but remember that tipping less than 15% sends a strong message.
